On August 18, 2024, India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Chennai. This facility, established by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG),

is

set to

significantly enhance

the country’s maritime safety,

particularly for mariners and fishermen in distress at sea. The MRCC is

equipped with

the latest technology for distress monitoring through terrestrial and

satellite systems, ensuring real-time management of emergency alerts by highly trained personnel. This development underscores the Indian government’s commitment to protecting lives at sea and ensuring a swift response in critical situations.

In

also virtually inaugurated two other

crucial facilities: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) Rajnath Singhin Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) in Puducherry. The RMPRC is the first of its kind in the region, focusing on coordinating responses to marine pollution incidents, including oil and chemical spills. The CGAE

is set to bolster

maritime

security along the Puducherry and

south Tamil Nadu coastlines by enhancing aerial surveillance and response capabilities through the deployment of advanced helicopters.

“The centre has latest equipment for distress monitoring

through terrestrial and satellite systems and is

equipped with advanced communication systems

for real-time management of alerts by highly trained personnel of ICG specialising in search and rescue procedures, with aircraft, ships and other facilities.”
